External Camera

Postby 805377003 » Thu Oct 15, 2020 11:25 am

Is there a certain type of external camera we have to purchase for exams?

no, I believe you can use any external camera that works with your computer. I think you can even use your phone camera for test purposes.
"For midterms and final, joining the Zoom proctoring session using your cell phone is another option. The student needs to make sure they have Zoom set up on their phone with their UCLA account, and the link to the Zoom session. Using your phone seems more complicated and less easy, but it is an option. Using an external webcam connected to your computer is an easier and more versatile setup as it is ready to use during any zoom session." At least for my TA, he wanted us to buy a seperate USB webcam, so he could have a sideview of our desk the entire time.

I'd check with your TA. Mine said a phone camera would most likely work. I think it would be a lot to expect every student to buy a webcam.

I think downloading zoom on your phone and pointing your camera at your workspace should be okay because LockDown browser on your computer closes all other windows anyways. But check with your TA to make sure!

My TA also confirmed that a phone would be acceptable as a webcam. She also said we will be practicing with it next week so we are prepared.

My TA said he wasn't sure if a phone camera would be acceptable, but he said he'd ask Lavelle just to confirm. Respondus doesn't allow me to join Zoom via web browser anyway, so if anyone else is having this issue, I'm not sure how getting a webcam would even help if LockDown can''t open Zoom via browser. It sounds like other people have heard that phone cameras are allowed so that's kinda what I'm banking on

I was pretty confused about the whole situation as well but I know respondus has a camera system integrated using our laptop camera. So does that mean we're going to be using Respondus on one device and our phones will be using zoom?

In our discussion section, my TA wasn't sure about using our phones to access Zoom during assessments. However, he told us that he will ask Dr.Lavelle about it. If we were to use our phones, it would be like as you said. We would be using "Respondus" on our computers while showing our workspace by using "Zoom" on our phones. I guess we will have a final answer next week about this issue.

Hope this helps

I think it depends on your TA, but mine said that we are allowed to use our phones as the "external webcam". As long as your entire work station is shown, it should be good.

Yes, I also think it depends on TA because mine said as long as we are on Zoom and he can see our area we can use a phone to point it in our area.

I agree, it depends on your TA and the information that they told you. Mine suggested a separate USB webcam but said that a phone camera would do the trick as well. This is so that he could have a few of our keyboard the entire time.
