Work function of electron

Postby Chem_Mod » Sat Sep 03, 2011 3:25 am

Question: Is the work function of an electron constant, or it possible to calculate the work function? Does that value vary depending on the metal used in the experiment?

Answer: The work function is not constant, but changes for electrons in different energy levels. This is highlighted by the periodic trend of ionization energy that shows increasing amount of energy is needed to eject an electron from the outer most shell. It is possible to calculate the work function, we do it one way by using .
