general wording of a question

Postby 005532550 » Wed Oct 20, 2021 4:58 pm

Supposing a question asks about energy emitted by a certain atom (in reference to the photoelectric effect and the E=hv equation), do we need to use avogadros number to convert it into moles? What units make a J?

thanks

Hi! I think for a question like this, you don't need to use Avogadro's number unless it is asking for the energy per mole of photon and you calculated the energy emitted per photon. Joules (J) are defined as kg*m^2*s^(-2). Hope this helps!

Yeah so if it's just for one atom, it's for one electron, which means for one photon. If they had said you have a mole of those atoms, then you need to calculate the energy for one photon and multiply by Avogadro's constant.
