Quiz 3 Winter 2016
I have posted the detailed midterm solutions on my class website at:

In the organic textbook, Introduction to Organic Chemistry, it is:

Are we going to be required to know the structures of basic compounds such as Isoprene, Propyne, Carvone, etc.? Or will they be given to us?

Given the IUPAC name you can figure out the structure.
Given the common name you will not be expected to know the structure.

When being asked to name a compound, are we going to have to give the IUPAC and common name? Or, is just the IUPAC name okay? (For the final also?)

Please read the announcement: "Quiz 3 covers from page 76 in the course reader to the end of page 99."
Typically IUPAC names are asked. If question does not specify then IUPAC or common name is fine.

Perhaps you meant to ask:
Are the Kinetics topics that were not covered in quiz 2, going to be in quiz 3? For example, the Arrhenius equation.

Alkenes and alkynes could be on quiz 3 as part of naming.
But geometric isomers (CIS/TRANS Z/E) will not be on quiz 3 as I covered them in todays lecture.

Do we have to memorize all the prefixes for alkane nomenclature, for instance, meth- for 1 carbon atom, prop- for 3 carbons, and all the way down to eicos- for 20 carbons?

Quiz 3 covers from page 76 in the course reader to the end of page 99.

For Quiz 2, the formula sheet did not exactly match up with the one that comes with the course reader. The integrated rate laws were not explicitly labelled as being for first order, second order, and zero order and it seemed like we were somewhat expected to have them memorized. Will this be the case for Quiz 3 as well?

when we are asked to "draw the structure" of some molecule, are we drawing the line structure or a structure that shows the atoms?

Equations are given in all quiz and exams in my Chem 14A and 14B classes. But they are never labeled. Students need to be able to identify them, which we spent a week doing in class for the first order, second order, and zero order reactions.

If the question explicitly states draw a line structure then it must be a line structure.
If a question asks to draw a Lewis structure then it must be a Lewis structure.
If a question ask to draw a structure then we will accept any valid structure.

Is it acceptable just to use IUPAC, or will we lose points on the quiz/final if we do not use common names?

Q2. 3-ethyl-2,2,4-trimethyl-pentane
Q5. 1-bromo-3-iodocyclohexane

Some of the TAs/UAs say that halogens are put in alphabetical order while others say that halogens are named by mass. Which is correct?

Halogens are always listed in alphabetical order when naming.
For geometric isomers, when determining cis/trans Z/E, one uses atomic number to determine priority for the atoms attached to each C atom in the double bond.
But this has nothing to do with naming and numbering of halogens.

Only recognize that they are nucleophiles due to available lone pair electrons.

I got my quiz 3 back and for one of the questions, they asked us to:
Determine the systematic name for the following organic molecule:
and the structure was a cyclopentane with 2 methyls and a bromine attached. When naming it though, I got marked off when I called the structure a cyclopentane even though there were five carbons all connected in a circle and the structure had no double or triple bonds, it was had those 3 substituents connected to it. Would the substituents cause the name of the structure to change or am I right on this?

I meant tert-butyl, not propyl, so it looked like a t-shaped structure was connected to the cyclopentane, but I got marked wrong on the cyclopentane part. Can anyone explain why that would be wrong?
