Hi Everyone,

Since the quarter is almost over and we have just a week of classes left, I thought it might be nice to start a forum on chemistry community where we could express our appreciation for everything Dr. Lavelle has done for us to help us succeed in Chemistry 14B.

So I guess I'll go first:

Dr. Lavelle,

Thank you so much for making chemistry super interesting this quarter. I'd previously learned about thermodynamics and rate mechanisms in high school, but it wasn't until this class that I began to really understand and enjoy the material. I'm grateful for all the times that you answered my questions during class, on chemistry community, and during office hours. I hope that you have a nice break from teaching next quarter and that you enjoyed teaching us just as much as we enjoyed learning from you.

Thank you. This is very much appreciated.

Starting today there are 20-24 hours of review sessions over an 8 day period as I reserved each room for 3 hours each day to allow extra time. My Friday review is already set to the maximum hour and a half. Took me about 4 hours to organize all this (reserve rooms, etc.). Try make as many as you can.

In addition to the review sessions the 'usual' weekly support is also offered week 10:
32 Office Hours per Week
28 Peer Learning Sessions per Week
Discussion Sections

And Chemistry Community where you can ask questions 24/7 right up the day of the final.
All questions posted by Sunday 1pm will be answered.

For those interested also use the Math Assistance section on my class website including the math office hours.
The 15 page Kinetics file/link is another resource and the Redox Reactions section. These are all on my class website:
https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/class-websites/chem14b/

I look forward to high-energy interaction and enjoyment in our remaining time together!

Dear Dr. Lavelle,

Thank you for such hard work and dedication you put into structuring Chemistry 14B. At first I was over whelmed when i bought the course reader but once you began going through the examples, and giving us more information it made it way easier to understand. We are all lucky to have a professor like you who is willing to spend so much time in office hours and hosting extra review sessions for us. In reality, i believe if it wasn't for your teaching method I would have been completely lost when learning thermodynamics. It has been a great learning experience being apart of your class, and Thank you for everything you have done Dr. Lavelle.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Orozco

After an abrupt awakening from 14A, I had no idea what to expect coming into this quarter. Now as we enter week 10, I'm ecstatic to say that I not only understand chem more than I ever have before, but I now look forward to 14C rather than dread it. Your countless resources and aids are much appreciated! Thank you for your commitment to this class!

Dear Dr. Lavelle,

I really want to thank you for all the work you have put into the class. I want to thank you for the way you present each lecture, the way you have set up chemistry community so students can get help 24/7, and the way you show off a genuine passion for chemistry and how you inspire us to also be passionate about chemistry. I do not have a big science background and after my rather lackluster performance in my other science classes, I felt worried on how I will advance in chemistry and in my major. 10 weeks in, and I feel that I have mastered the concepts more fully than any other class I have taken before in my time so far at UCLA. For once, I feel confident in my classes. For once, I feel confident in my major and that I'm making a right choice continuing science. I cannot thank you enough for giving me this sense of passion and confidence I have not felt in a long time.

Dear Dr. Lavelle,

Thank you for being such an amazing professor! I admit, at the beginning, I was afraid of taking your class because I've always had a hard time understanding chemistry. I was honestly at the point where I thought I was a lost cause when it came to solving anything that had chem in it until I took your class. You gave me hope for chemistry and for that and much more you are beyond one of the best professors I have ever taken. Your hard work and the dedication you put into your students does not go unnoticed. Although the material is difficult, you always know how to simplify the material so that we can understand it and apply it to harder problems. And thanks to you, I am able to say that I actually know chemistry or at least understand it!

Dear Dr. Lavelle,

Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into teaching us. Before Chem 14B started, I was doubting myself if I should take your class or should I wait it out. Fortunately, I made the right choice. I really learned a lot from your class compared to 14A, and the UAs and TAs really helped me understand the concept even more. I am very excited about organic chemistry and I feel like you really prepared me with the basics. I am truly to honored to have you as my chemistry teacher and you have made chem 14B an unforgettable experience! Thank you so much and keep inspiring your future students! :D

Dear Dr. Lavelle,

I'm incredibly thankful to have had you for both 14A and 14B. It's honestly been such a pleasure attending your lectures, office hours, and review sessions. I am thankful for all the resources that you've provided, as they remind me that I don't need to struggle alone in my endeavors to understand chemistry. They also remind me that to succeed, I need to take full advantage of what is being offered to me as soon as the opportunity arises, so I don't get swept behind.

From your enthusiasm at the beginning of every class and your pride in the Chemistry Community, it is clear to me, and surely every other student, that you are not only passionate about chemistry, but about teaching. Thank you for putting us, your students, first in everything you do – especially with the challenges and hard times you've been going through – and for devoting countless hours and efforts toward giving everyone an equal opportunity of success regardless of where we began in our understandings of chemistry. It must have been so difficult for you, and I truly hope we made it worth your while. I believe we are so lucky to have such a rare gem of a professor to guide us in one of the most notoriously difficult courses in the beginning of our undergraduate careers. I will definitely miss your joke Fridays and I hope you continue your efforts to keep up with current memes. :)

Wishing you the best,
Pauline

Dear Dr. Lavelle,
You are truly an inspirational man and a wonderful professor. You provide so many resources to all your students so that everyone can succeed in this class, and I have found them incredibly helpful. Whenever you are lecturing you always look so excited to be explaining chemistry, and it makes this subject so much more interesting. When I heard that your brother had passed away during this quarter, my heart broke for you. My own brother passed this summer, so when I heard that you were coming back to class after hardly more than a weekend, I was astonished! I should have known that your love for your students would overcome your grief. Even so, I know if I were in your shoes I would not be able. You are an inspiration to us all, and a special model for me.
Thank you,
Paul

You exude such genuine passion for chemistry and it has positively influenced my learning experience. It is definitely refreshing to learn from a professor who is so dedicated to his students and the material he is teaching. I was intimidated coming into your class for 14A, but looking back, I am grateful to have been taught by you. Despite the difficulties of your personal life, you continued to teach as though everything was all right for the sake of your students, and for that, my peers and I are thankful. Thank you for all that you do!

Dear Dr. Lavelle,

Thank you so much for providing all these chemistry resources to us. You have worked tirelessly for us and I truly apprecitate all the thought you put into everything you have done for our class. Despite the challenges in your personal life, you made the class an amazing experience and devoted countless hours to improving the education and future of so many students. I always look forward to attending lecture because you not only present material in a precise manner, but you manage to make it inspiring with your good nature and humor as well. You are not only an incredible professor, but an incredible person as well.

For example, my favorite lecture that I attended was back on 14A when you discussed polydentate ligands, chelation, and cisplatin. The day before, I had just turned in forms to start the change of major process from physiological science to music because I felt that music was the path I wanted to take in life. I had been split about what to do even before I applied to UCLA, but finally in week 5 or so of my first year, I decided to switch to music. However, this lecture changed my mind about switching majors. It showed me how chemistry can have such a huge role in helping others, especially with the drug cisplatin. Your teaching made me see how chemistry can be used as a tool, not just some information we are forced to memorize. The way you presented the information really made me curious to learn more about biological and pharmaceutical chemistry. I have been a life-long musician, but your class honestly has made me very passionate about chemistry. The next day, I decided to stick down the physiological science route in order to continue with the pre-med path. It was your lecture on coordination complexes that made me make the decision, and now I am sure 100% science is the path for me.

I feel that you have prepared me not only to complete 14 series chemistry and continue on with undergraduate and hopefully medical education, but I also feel that your class has inspired me to pursue a lifelong pursuit of learning. Words cannot express how influential your class and teaching has been on me. I am sure many others feel the same way.

Thank you,
Justin Yi

Thank you for being so advocating for students. No other professor has so many office hours from himself, TA's, UA's, and PLF's. Not to mention you have Chemistry Community for anything as well. You have so many resources, and you give students no excuse. That's amazing. You truly care for students to do well because you know that Chemistry is something students struggle with/are adverse to because of high school.

So, thank you for being clear, caring, and providing so much space for students to ask for help.

Dear Dr. Lavelle,
Thank you for the two most amazing education quarters of chemistry. I have never seen a more dedicated professor/ educator to his subject and his students. With countless resources, office hours, and bruincasts, you made sure that every student had the opportunity to succeed in your class if they wanted to. I really appreciated how the finals and quizzes in both Chem 14A and Chem 14B were difficult but FAIR in terms of what you had taught in class and provided in the HW problems. I never took an interest in Chemistry in high school (I honestly hated it) but after these two quarters, I have been able to view chemistry in a whole different light (especially now that I actually understand it). Your dedication to your class truly inspired me to stay motivated academically regardless of the many hardships that chemistry entailed.
Thank you, Dr. Lavelle!

PS. I loved seeing Dr. Lavelle's growth in comprehending memes :)

Thank you Dr. Lavelle for providing so many resources for us. Chemistry has always been hard for me to understand since high school, so it is nice to know that there are many opportunities for me to ask for help when I need it. Additionally, it is cool that you always try to make chemistry fun with your side jokes and chemistry community jokes post. Keep doing what you are doing and thanks again for the quarter!

I came into UCLA with absolute no chemkstrh background. Dr. Lavelle,
As a student who needs to work hard to understand material, I really appreciate the way your class was structured. Even those who are quick to comprehend tough chemistry topics were forced to work through problems that expanded our idea of the raw chemistry world. You did not only teach us chemistry, you taught us how to think.

Without ever speaking to you personally, I can tell (even from several rows back in CS50) that you are one of the kindest people around. We all notice how your energy is continuously geared toward bettering the experience of every pre-health student you teach, and we appreciate you so much for that! I will miss seeing your cheery face every day next quarter!

All the best to you and your family,
Greta Tobin

Dr. Lavelle,

Thank you for having such great energy (see what I did there?) during your lectures! Your passion and excitement for chemistry radiates through your lectures. Although, I was intimidated by Chemistry at the college level, your class format allowed me to grow as a student and less afraid of the dense material especially not having taken AP Chemistry. Also, thank you for teaching us the derivations of equations, it really helped break down how the material throughout the course connects to one another. I only had you for 14B, but overall, it was a wonderful ten weeks and I can honestly say, I'm ready to conquer some more Chemistry. Thanks again!

Best,

Dear Dr. Lavelle,
Thank you for all that you have done for us. Although chemistry is difficult, you have made it easier with all the resources you have created. It is rare for a professor to care this much for his students, especially a professor with 1000+ students, but you truly have shown a level of helpfulness and kindness that is rare to come upon. You have truly created chemistry as a community, with a site for questions 24/7, but also with all the office hours and learning sessions. The amount of time and effort you have put into your students is unfathomable, all the hours you put into teaching and helping us that we don't even see. Words can't truly express how thankful I am to have had you as my professor. Thank you for being such a selfless professor as well, thinking of us when time off was really needed. I'm truly sorry for the recent hard times, but you have been so strong and have been able to come back to teach and always with a smile on your face. That is such a special quality, and once again, I'm so thankful to have had you as my professor. I hope you have an amazing spring break. Your future students are very fortunate. :)
