Common names on final

Postby Julianne Seog 3K » Wed Mar 15, 2017 3:15 pm

I remember Dr. Lavelle mentioning something in class that we only need to know IUPAC naming. Does that mean we do not need to know common names like Iso and Neo that are mentioned in the course reader for the final exam?

Some common names such as iso- prefixes are also used as substituents in IUPAC naming, but as for the overall picture I feel like Dr. Lavelle leans toward IUPAC naming and wouldn't require both on the final. Not sure though, so if someone else could confirm this that'd be great!

My TA said it will most likely be IUPAC naming in general, but if they want common name, the question will specifically ask for IUPAC and common names.

Naming questions will ask for the name and we will accept both common and IUPAC.
