reading textbook

Postby Yutian Zhao -1J » Tue Jan 09, 2018 9:26 pm

Since Professor Lavelle would cover topics in the order listed in outline, then if we read the textbook by following the lecture materials, there would be lots of things that we haven't learnt and are related to the previous parts. Should we pass them or read from the beginning of Chapter 8 by ourselves?

Yes, I was also wondering which sections of the textbook would be advisable to read in order to follow along with Dr. Lavelle's lecture schedule.

As well, what problems in the Chapter 8 problem set should we begin with?

Maybe start from the back? Questions are divided into big sections so I'm starting with the ones covered in class!

The way Dr. Lavelle is covering chapter 8 is by going through thermochemistry first and then thermodynamics. The way the textbook is setup, chapter 8 starts out with thermodynamics and then moves into thermochemistry. Therefore, if you want to follow how Dr. Lavelle is covering it, you should start reading about halfway through the chapter and then go back to the first half.

Not sure which problems exactly correspond to the sections of the book, but I typically read the chapter and then do all the problems so I recommend doing that first. It helps with a holistic understanding of the concepts.

I am guessing that we are starting at page 278, at the section titled "Enthalpy." That would correspond to questions starting at 8.29.
