*Additional Forum Features*

Postby Chem_Mod » Wed Mar 05, 2014 10:08 am

This forum already has an extensive database of chemistry Q&A presented in a logical format.
There are also extensive search features enabling customized searches.
There is a high quality equation editor and spell checker, and images, URLs, flash, etc., can be used.
There is no spam and the automatic bad language filters keep Chemistry Community a clean site.

A new feature added this week to Chemistry Community is email notification. Students in my classes can now subscribe to forums or topics, and/or get notifications when a reply is submitted to one of your posts.

What other Chemistry Community features would you like?

It'd be cool if we could "like" or mark a post as "helpful."

Yes I totally agree-- I know of forums (not from UCLA, but still academic ones that I have used previously, e.g. Art of Problem Solving) that have "thanks" buttons, so as to prevent clutter which can occur when people type "thank you" or "I understand" as a reply at the end of every thread.

I think it would be interesting to allow images to be uploaded, so that we could draw out certain diagrams or mechanisms for clarification of concepts.

Right... maybe something that at least allows us to draw Lewis structures, Newman projections, etc.?

it will be nice to have a "solved" sign beside the questions that are solved, because some questions are just left unexplained due to the large amount of replies with extra questions attached to it

being able to attach pictures will be really nice. Easier to post questions and explain answers

Where are they?
Post the links here so they can be answered.

On the topic of additional forum features, I think a "bookmark" button would be nice, to save posts that we'd like to view at a later time, or to see answers to posts when more people have viewed and answered the question. Also, as mentioned before, a "resolved" button that tells us whether a post has reached a conclusion/resolution would be great, especially for this website!

Here is one that I am sure a lot of people would like answered:
viewtopic.php?f=140&t=3382

I know there are others that were also buried in large numbers of questions but I can't find them now... I'll post them here if I come across them sometime soon.

Is there a strikethrough option for the text? I think that might be helpful when we post something that is not entirely accurate, but another user commented on that problem. I wouldn't want to edit/correct my previous post because that can make the comment seem confusing and irrelevant, but it might be helpful to be able to cross out the inaccurate part so it does not confuse anyone else who is viewing the thread.

Good suggestion but then if someone posts a related follow up question after it has been marked as solved it will look odd ...

Good suggestion but it can cause problems such as 'competitions' as to whose posts get the most likes, etc.
This is a science forum and I definitely want all students to feel comfortable asking questions (or answering) to seek understanding - not to get likes. Perhaps helpful is a good option and I will think about this some more.

During the Spring and Summer I will have time to develop Chemistry Community further.

Another good suggestion.

For 2 years I looked for a phpBB plugin for drawing molecular structures, viewing structures, etc.
If anyone finds one please post link here.

Thanks. Since several of the questions and answers had typos and needed correcting I edited them and added all the comments in the one answer to make it easier to follow.

Very good suggestion and is another one on the 'list to do'.

Professor Lavelle, thank you very much for those explanations! They were really helpful :)

Sorry for more trouble, I just realized these two have not yet been answered (they're the last ones, I promise!):
