Studying for First Discussion Test

Postby Marina Gollas 1A » Fri Jan 18, 2019 8:57 am

I am a bit nervous for our first test in our discussion sections, and I was wondering what everyone else was doing to prepare themselves for this test, especially with the limited amount time, since I know some problems can take a while to complete. Thank you. :)

Same here!! But I'm planning to study for the test by going over lecture notes and tying them back to my PLF notes (which are very helpful), I'm also trying to teach the topics to a buddy of mine who doesn't know the topics and if I am able to teach it then it'll mean I really learned the topic :), hopefully this helps!

I'd say to try and use as many as possible of Dr. Lavelle's provided resources. Since they are created by him and he oversees them I am sure that they are all geared toward the subjects that he sees are most important for our success in the class. I'd definitely recommend going through the video modules on the website, since it helps to conceptualize everything a lot better. I'd also recommend reading the book sections and then doing the book practice problems that correspond to that section. This will help to cement your understanding, and aat the end of the day if you know how to do the problems then you should be in a really good spot. If you are still confused on any section or part then definitely go to office hours and learning sessions where you can ask any question and work through it with someone else. Forming study groups also works for some people since it keeps everyone focused and accountable. There are study rooms around campus that have white board walls that may be good for this when writing out a problem. Something that has worked for me is reading through my notes from the day. That way I re-enforce what I learned that day, and I can also see what sections I am still confused on so I can ask about it in office hours.
I hope this helps

I solve all of the homework problems before tests because this helped me last quarter in 14A. I am also going to redo the video module problems.

I work through all the homework problems and reread the chapters along with the lecture notes! It’s really helpful to attend the step up sessions or form a study group so you can teach each other what you don’t know. Hope this helped!

Hey, just wanted to add that when doing the hw problems, the later numbers are typically the most helpful as they are usually the hardest and incorporate the most out of that section. Good luck!

Does anyone know if the UA sessions will still be available this Monday? (even though it is a long weekend?)

Lavelle emphasizes to do the homework as a way to prepare for the tests.
