Electron capture

Postby Annabelle Shilley 1L » Mon Dec 02, 2024 12:00 am

What is electron capture? Does this contradict that electrons can never fall into the nucleus?

Electron capture occurs when an electron from the inner shell combines with a proton in the nucleus to form a neutron and emit a neutrino. This process reduces the atomic number by one. It doesn’t contradict the idea that electrons can't fall into the nucleus because electron capture is a nuclear process involving the weak force, not a simple orbital transition.
