Study Tips for midterm

Postby Carlos Martinez 2K » Mon Jan 25, 2021 12:07 am

Any tips on how to best study for Dr. Lavelle's midterms for anyone who has taken his classes before? would reviewing module assessments and sapling tests be good?

Definitely review Sapling problems, they are super helpfult o guide you through the basic types of questions he might have on the midterms. Last quarter, the most helpful things for me were the Peer learning Workshops and the textbook problems! Textbook problems are great practice and really help you apply what you've learned in lecture

I usually do the UA worksheets and review past textbook problems I found difficult or do the unassigned ones from the book.

From past experience, textbook problems seem to be the most similar to the types of test questions that are usually on the exams. Also don't forget to study the conceptual parts!

Reviewing sapling questions and doing the problems in the outline really help.

Go over lectures that talk about topics you have trouble on and read the book and the questions

I always redo the textbook problems (some problems on the midterm will be directly from the assigned textbook problems!) and review the UA worksheets. I'm also planning to make flashcards from my notes to test myself on the conceptual information, because understanding the conceptual information is just as important as knowing how to solve problems. Testing myself also helps me identify the topics I'm not as confident about so I know to study those more. Lastly, I'm planning to go through the learning objectives listed under the Outlines on Dr. Lavelle's website to make sure I'm studying everything we're expected to know. Best of luck on the midterm! :)

Hi, personally I recommend doing the textbook problems and redoing the ones that you had trouble with. Also, attend UA sessions if possible!

Textbook problems were the most useful to me last quarter, the format of them is very similar to the ones on exams.

I would also recommend going over the outlines Dr. Lavelle has posted for each section. By going over each bullet point, you can understand what is expected to be known from each chapter.

Definitely go over the textbook problems a couple times. A few questions from the textbook are usually on the tests, and their concepts are really important to understand. If you can do the textbook problems well, you'll be fine.

In my opinion and based on what I've heard from the TA's, going through and fully understanding the textbook problems is key to preparing for the midterm and final exams.

most definitely review all of the textbook problems and make sure you understand them, cause in 14A a lot of test questions came from the textbook!

Does anyone have tips on how to study for the second midterm AFTER they took the first? What would you change?

I went to UA sessions (really good worksheets, questions, and explanations provided!) and also reviewed my discussion section problems to see I I could do them on my own.

I'm watching videos on youtube to try and help nail the concept this time around since thermo seems to be a handful... plus I've always used outline book problems to study with too :)

The UA sessions are SO helpful! I know Justin is doing a review on Thursday from 10AM-12PM (instead of the split up step up session and workshop). Highly recommend! I also like going through all the textbook problems on the outline. In reference to your other question, I think the module assessments were more for the earlier units from what I remember.

Sapling is very helpful! Make sure to look at the solution explanations at the end of each problem because those explain a lot of concepts and steps and they're really helpful.

I find the best practice to be completing the textbook problems and then reading the corresponding textbook chapter to make sure you've covered all the content. One thing I highly recommend is to really struggle any harder problems (even if that means revisiting them later) before resorting to the solution manual. From my experience, working through a problem as far as possible and then going back and identifying your mistake/missed steps is much more efficient than just reading a solution manual.
