Midterm 1 Reactions

Postby Anvy 1G » Sat Jan 30, 2021 10:35 pm

Im not so sure it was pretty much what i expected but not at the same time. Anybody else had a different reaction to it or was there about the same across the class.

I personally found the test to be a little more difficult than I had anticipated. I was able to do all the problems from workshops and the homework; however, the midterm's problems seemed a little harder. Maybe I was just nervous. Can anyone else relate?

I agree, it was harder than expected but it could’ve just been my test anxiety kicking in

I agree, I felt a little rushed this time but definitely not as much as during the final last quarter. I think doing the textbook problems really helped though!

I really felt the "Maybe I was just nervous" bit. I'm an international student and so I took my Midterm at 6 AM in the morning. I was already anxious about missing my test so I woke up at 5 AM. Turns out waking up early to go over notes made me even more anxious. I felt like the stress clouded my judgment and focus during the midterm. I'm not sure why but online exams scare me way more than normal exams do.

Does anyone have any tips on how to keep cortisol levels low?

Yeah I'm glad I did the textbook problems because I noticed that some of the midterm questions were either exactly the same or similar to some of the textbook problems Professor Lavelle assigned. Some other questions were definitely tricky for sure and I'm hoping I didn't make careless mistakes.

I agree with the above posts. It was a little harder than I expected. Time wise, it was manageable. However, there were some questions I did not know how to approach.

Yeah I definitely thought it was harder. The questions from the homework and sapling seemed easier, but maybe that was because there were multiple attempts.

I also felt like it was harder than I expected. I didn't feel as good after this midterm as I did with last quarter's midterms.

To me, it felt like the difficulty of the midterm 2 for 14A. I think this midterm was definitely harder than the first one we had for 14A.

I agree, I definitely felt this midterm was a bit tougher than 14A’s midterms. I felt really rushed to complete the calculations and didn’t have as much time to double check my work as I would have liked.

It felt almost like everything that I did to prepare wasn't really on there in the way that I expected or hoped. The problems felt like semi related versions of those problems that required a lot of on the spot thinking of how to adjust my understanding to fit them. That much problem solving in my opinion should require way more time than what was given.

I also agree that there were some difficult questions on the test. For the next midterm, I will try to start studying well ahead of time and definitely focus more on the homework problems.

I was really surprised by the amount of thermochem to be honest! I thought it would be more acids/equilibria, but it ended up being a lot of thermo which I wasn't too prepared for.

I was also quite frustrated by having my calculations all done to then find that none of the answer choices reflected the answer. It was a lot just a bit rushed but arguably doable.

I feel like the midterm was fair but did have more wordy/complicated questions than we had seen in the textbook or the UA workshops but I felt like if you had a good understanding of the material then you had an okay chance for a good score

I agree with most of what's been said above! I finished a bit early, so I had some time to go over my answers, but ended up overthinking all of them (leading to changing a couple answers) which I think is going to end up harming my grade :(

Meditating has really helped me with my test anxiety. It definitely feels uncomfortable at first but with practice it can put you in a really great and calm headspace, even on the day of a stressful test.

I don't feel to confident about the midterm. I was somewhat stressed that day already and, during the test, there were some random distractions just due to my environment that made it really hard to focus. I also think I should have spent more time going to UA sessions and doing textbook problems. I will definitely use that information, though, to make sure I prepare better for the next midterm.

I thought it was similar to the midterms from Lavelle's Chem 14A, so I wasn't too surprised. Of course, still anxious to see my score. I hope I didn't make a dumb mistake that I wouldn't have made if I was going slower, but that's just how tests go.

It was more difficult compared to 14A midterms. The questions weren't like what I prepared for. Would have loved to have prepped with quite similar formats.

It was definitely difficult for me because I did not have Lavelle for 14A, but now that I know the jist of it I would say the next one will be better. I did like the structure of the test, though. I felt like it was the right amount of questions, just thought a little more time would have been better.

I felt that doing the textbook problems on the outlines prepared me pretty well for the exam, and I actually ended up having lots of time to double check my answers. I don't want to say anything yet for fear of jinxing myself but I felt like it was a fair exam.

I definitely thought this midterm was harder than the 1st midterm we had for 14A. There were a lot more enthalpy problems than I anticipated, and the wordiness of the longer problems threw me off a little. I also thought these problems were more difficult than the ones we went over in UA sessions, but from reading these comments it seems like the textbook problems might be more helpful to prepare for the next midterm. Overall I'm just happy we got through it.

That was definitely tricky. There were a some questions from the textbook.....those were probably the only questions I was confident in....and then the reset were quite challenging.

I generally feel like I did alright on the midterm, but as some other people have mentioned, I definitely did struggle with keeping my cool and battling test anxiety while taking this test. I'm generally a pretty calm person, but find that I do poorly on tests due to lack of focus. Does anyone have any tips on how they handle test-taking stress?

I think it was more tedious and I felt like I was running out of time by the end of the test. I know it would've been better if I had done all of the textbook problems, but I didn't get to all. Overall, Lavelle and the textbook did a good job in preparing me.

Personally it was a little harder than I anticipated. I did all of the textbook problems (from the outlines) at least twice and went through most of the UA worksheets, but for some reason when it came to the test questions I didn't get them as easily. Could definetly be my test anxiety though.

I definitely thought that midterm was pretty rough and harder than last quarter's tests. Definitely a few that I didn't know how to do. So you're totally not alone!

Also, results will probably be out at the end of the week or so @Lisa (though he hasn't said yet).

I thought all of the problems except for one were quite straightforward. The one that was difficult was extremely confusing, I interpreted it as not having enough information to solve and later couldn't figure out how to solve it.

Yeah, I think the test went as I expected. The structure was pretty much the same for Chem14A so there was nothing too surprising. I was a little unsure what to expect because I took 14a with a different professor but it seemed relatively fair. It wasn't super easy and I didn't feel 100% confident but there weren't any major surprises in my opinion. At least we know what to expect more for the next midterm and can adjust our study methods!

I"m upset with myself that I messed up on one of the ten-point questions, it was literally a textbook problem I worked on two days prior. But there's nothing I can do now but study harder for the next midterm.

I was also feeling confident going into the exam but it was much harder than expected and I'm not happy with the results. I know the next one is going to be even harder too :(

I was a little nervous because a few questions tripped me up with the wording where I wasn't sure how to interpret the question, but luckily I interpreted the right way, so I guess my result was better than I anticipated.

I did all the textbook problems and felt well prepared, but I feel like I made simple mistakes and the questions were oddly worded. I felt like my score was a lot worse than the knowledge of the material that I have.

I agree, it was harder than expected but it could’ve just been that I felt time was a factor for it

Meditating has really helped me with my test anxiety. It definitely feels uncomfortable at first but with practice it can put you in a really great and calm headspace, even on the day of a stressful test.

I will try this! Meditation has helped me in the past but I've gotten lazy and a little discouraged because it is way harder than anyone would think. Thank you again for your input.
