Midterm 2 Reactions

With Midterm 2 two weeks away behind us. What do yall think now that the grades have come out and we are slowly creeping towards the end of the quarter.

honestly think the tests are pretty fair and the textbook/sapling are good representations of the test difficulties.

I did better on midterm 2 than 1, now a little scared for the final since it's cumulative and there is more I need to study.

I feel like I will never get used to how fast the quarter system is but yeah, now that our final is only 2 weeks away, I should really start preparing.

I was quite pleased with Midterm 2, especially since I now know that my studying habits are paying off. I would say, however, that there were a few more conceptual questions on Midterm 2 than I anticipated, so I expect to spend more time studying these chemical processes conceptually rather than just knowing how to do problems associated with them.

I'm feeling a little nervous for the final since it's cumulative. I also need to focus more of my time on understanding the conceptual aspect of the content rather than the textbook/sapling problems since there were a few conceptual questions that stumped me on the last midterm.

I am satisfied with my Midterm 2 score, but knowing that I did make simple errors does make me a little disappointed since the questions are worth a lot of points. I definitely wish I focused on conceptual concepts more, but for now I am just going to continue with the assigned textbook problems and start reviewing for the final!

I noticed this, too. Does anyone have any tips/ resources on how to specifically prepare for conceptual questions? I think that could be useful for the final.

I thought it was going to be more mathematical questions than concept questions so I was surprised by that. I felt that due to that misconception I didn't study the overall concepts well enough and focused on the textbook problems. Right after the test I thought I did extremely bad, but I actually did a tiny bit better than midterm 1.

I mean obviously this is a personal choice and if you think taking the class again would help you get a better grade then sure, but if you still have a chance of passing the class this quarter then I wouldn't drop it and I would just grind really hard for the final because you could improve you're grade a lot with a good grade on the final.
Good luck!

I studied more of textbook problems and trying to understand the mathematical aspect for the content of midterm 2 and was surprised at how many conceptual questions there were that it threw me off more than midterm 1. Definitely gonna pay attention to that more.

Midterm 2 was not as bad I thought it was going to be. With that being said I definitely did go study more than the first midterm. I think that the questions were fair, but there was definitely more conceptual stuff than I thought there would be.

I also found it very surprising that most of the midterm was conceptual questions. I will be definitely studying more of those concepts for the final.

I was definitely unprepared for the sheer amount of concept questions going into midterm 2 which was disappointing because that reflected in my score. I'm hoping that the final will be more of what I anticipate instead of a surprise.

I definitely did much better on the second test than the first even though I studied more for Midterm 1. I think it has something to do with the amount of concept-based questions which have proven to be easier for me.

Honestly, my results from the past two exams have been better than I expected. I am doing way better on the 14B exams compared to the 14A exams (I find that weird because imo 14B material is much harder than the 14A material), and if I get a decent score on the final, I may be able to finish this class with a pretty good grade!

I did a lot better on midterm 2 than I did on the first one, so I will keep the study techniques I used for midterm 2, like fully understanding the readings and then watching lectures. I'm gonna try to focus and spread out more of my time for doing more textbook problems and going to the sessions held by TA's. Hopefully the final goes well, Good luck to everyone!

I feel like studying for the midterms wasn't as overwhelming since I only focused on the topics we were learning (focused on the things on the outlines). But since the final is cumulative now, I don't have a set plan on how much I should focus on certain concepts. Finals are never easy. For 14A, I feel like I lucked out because majority of the problems I had were based on questions that I had practiced a lot, so fingers crossed that I get the same luck.

Now that scores are out, I'm definitely stressed about the final. I walked away from the midterm feeling pretty okay about it. I honestly thought I did better than I ended up doing so I'm just a little worried about how I'm gonna do on the final now. There isn't a lot of leeway in this class when it comes to how much you can miss if you want to get an A/A-, but I guess that just means I've got to put in more effort studying if anything.

I surprisingly did very well on this midterm compared to midterm 1. After midterm 1, my chances at an A in this class kinda went downhill but I think if I do well on the final, I could manage a B+! As long as it's better than a B-. Midterm 2 had more time than midterm 1 and that was SO helpful I'm not going to lie.

In regards to this, I think that everyone stressed about their midterms grade and the final come up should meet with their TA to see where they went wrong. Sometimes they reveal silly mistakes that could save you some points on the final.

I didn't know the grades were out, are they on myUCLA? Mine isn't there. Either way, with midterm 2 I was a bit surprised by the amount of conceptual questions and I feel like that means there will probably be more questions on the final that cover midterm 2 calculations.

I'm happy with my score, but definitely need to brush up on my conceptual knowledge. I tend to overanalyze questions and the MC format makes it particularly difficult; I like to explain my reasoning so that my grader knows why I'm answering the way I am. However, I do think the test was fair and I'm hoping that the final is not too hard :)

I'm satisfied with my score; however, some of the conceptual questions threw me off a bit.

I was upset by the score on my second midterm. It just reminded me that I should not walk out even a little confident on exams lol, or it'll just hurt more. I don't have a lot of time to study for the final, but I will try to fit as much as possible.

Honestly, the hardest part about the midterms (and the upcoming final) is trying to keep up with my weekly workload while simultaneously studying. Like many have mentioned above, it is easy to get a bit behind. But it is reassuring that I have enough points to pass this class already (thank you Lavelle for the extension of the grade scale), so if all else fails, there is that lol

Yah, I agree with everyone. Midterm 2 was mostly conceptual questions. Thus, before the final, I plan on not only focusing on solving problems but also understanding the topics more conceptually.

I feel like the midterms were pretty fair so far.

If there's anything I've learned from Midterm 2, it's to review the concepts alongside the practice problems. I usually only have time to do Sapling and textbook problems, and now I'll spend some time reviewing major concepts from the outline.

If there's anything I've learned from this class as a whole, it's how easy it is to fall behind (especially in the time periods before midterms when you need to spend time reviewing for midterms AND learning new material).

I think I'm most worried about being able to study all the material since there are so many practice problems and topics. It's just gonna be hard to manage my time since we all have other classes and other finals to prepare for at the same time.

I'm most worried about mixing up concepts.

I'm stressed about the final because of my time management skills, but I'm gonna try to start earlier so I don't get too overwhelmed!

I was surprised at how many conceptual problems there were on midterm 2. Although I didn't do as well as I hoped, the test was definitely fair. Hopefully we will finish the new content soon so that we will have more time to review for the final!

I felt pretty good about this midterm. Although I didn't do as well as I expected, I did significantly better than the first midterm. I was surprised how many conceptual questions there were compared to questions that required calculations though since I thought it would be similar to the first midterm but just with the material from after the first midterm. I think going into the final I'll start studying earlier and really solidifying my knowledge with both the textbook problems and the concepts.

I didn't do too bad but not as great as I'd hoped. Now I'm a little worried about the final since the grading scale is so tight!

I thought midterm 2 was about the same as the first one. I thought both were pretty hard and did about the same on both. I'm really preparing hard for this final and hoping it is about the same as the midterms so I know what to expect.

I was pleasantly surprised by this midterm, now I'm just working to keep up the same momentum for the final.
