Percent Deprotonation vs Percent Ionization

Postby Olivia Dalton 2I » Sun Jan 29, 2023 6:34 pm

Hi,

I've seen percent deprotonation and percent ionization asked on several different examples, and I was just wondering if these are solved by the same equation? [H+]equ/[HA]initial

Based on the problems I have solved so far on Achieve, I believe they are solved the same. However, I am still currently working on a few of the problems with those topics, so I am not 100% sure. But I agree, if there is a difference in formulas, solving, etc. I would love to know.

Yes, the processes of calculation for both percent ionization and percent protonation are ultimately the same! Acids typically ask for percent ionization because it goes from a neutral to a negative state, while bases ask for percent protonation because it goes for a neutral to a positive state.
