Dog bone shapes from 2/6 lecture? [ENDORSED]

Hi all,

I was a bit confused in lecture today about what the structure Lavalle was drawing represented. He described them as 'dog bones' and I'm sure he mentioned what they represented, but I think I was either too busy writing down notes or I missed what he said. Does anyone know anything about this and can explains? Thanks!

he said they represented like 2 containers with a thin tube in the middle. the thin tube is so we can only have the atoms on one side or the other

The dog bone shapes just represent a vessel with two containers connected by a thin tube. It's a way to visualize how the molecules are in different positions.

The the dog bones in lecture were just demonstrating the position/arrangement of atoms in a system. This is used to calculate W (degeneracy). The positions of where the molecules are don't have an effect on the energy of the system, but it does have an effect on the W value you will get based off how many of these different arrangements/micro-states/distributions (all the same thing) you can achieve with the atoms.

That confused me as well during lecture but realized that they actually represent thin tubes and which are meant to show molecule positioning. Redrawing them as actual tubes in your notes next to the bones will help you remember the actual meaning easier.
