### Homework Problem 1.57.

Hey Guys!

I feel like this question is super easy, but my brain is so full of chemistry.

Can someone explain how to do problem 1.57?

Here is the question: "Lines in the Balmer Series of the hydrogen spectrum are observed at 656.3, 486.1, 434.0, and 410.2nm. What is the wavelength of the next line in the series?"

Hi,

Since this is a Balmer series, we know that that n1 = 2, so the fifth line must be n2 = 7. You then have the use the Rydberg equation:

v = Rydberg's constant x ((1/(2^2) - 1/(7^2))

After solving for this frequency (v), use c = wavelength x frequency. Plug in the frequency you just solved for and the speed of light constant (c) to obtain the wavelength. This method should get you the correct answer!
