Finding the Energy of A Photon
Some of the homework problems asked to calculate the energy of a photon and I am confused on how to do that. Is there a formula needed to solve for that?

Depending on the type of question this could be very simple. If you are given enough information in the question just use the formula E=hv. That would be the energy of the photon is equal to the frequency times Plank's constant.

If you remember the equations like E=hv and c=λv, you can manipulate the energy equation to find the energy of a photon. For example, E is also equal to hc/λ .

The following formula can be also used to find the energy of a photon:
Ephoton = Eenergy remove electron + Eexcess
Ephoton = hv [*]where h is planck's constant and v is frequency
Eenergy remove electron is also called the work function or the threshold energy
Eexcess = (1/2)mv2 [*][*]where v is velocity
Ephoton = Eenergy remove electron + Eexcess
