Energy Levels

So when we talk about energy levels and we use n=1, n=2, and n=3, what does this "n" mean?

"n" is the principal quantum level. Each n value represents an orbital with a certain amount of energy. n=1 is closest to the nucleus, and as n increases the energy increases as well since you are getting further and further away from the nucleus. It takes more energy to excite an electron and get it further away from the nucleus.

I had a similar question, except mine was regarding the L and the ml. How do we find these out based on the energy level per say n=3 ??

Do we do n-1?

L is the angular momentum quantum number and can have values from 0 to n-1 so if the principle quantum number, n=3, L can have the values of 0, 1, and 2. ml is the magnetic quantum number and its values are from L to -L so if n=2 then the values of ml are -2, -1, 0, 1, and 2. Hope this helped!

This is second sentence is actually wrong, n is equal to the shell not the orbital.
