### Balmer Series

In the book, it says that the Balmer Series consists of lines in the visible region of the spectrum where n1=2. However, in class, Lavelle said that in the Balmer series the electron transitions to n=2, meaning that the final state, n2, is 2 (n2=2). These two statements contradict each other. Am I misinterpreting the book and/or what Lavelle is teaching? Someone please help my brain is exploding!! Thank you!

I believe for the Balmer series, n=2 is the lower quantum level for electrons. It can be the final or initial state (n1 or n2), depending on whether light is being absorbed or emitted; but the wavelengths of spectral lines involved are the same for absorption and emission.
