Balmer vs. Lyman Series
Can anyone help clarify what the differences between the Balmer and Lyman series and what they are used for?

For the Lyman series,which corresponds to UV light, the electrons come to rest at the energy level n=1. and then for the Balmer series, which corresponds to visible light, the electrons come to rest at the energy level n=2
both can be used to compare lines for other elements.

The Lyman series involve jumps to or from the ground state (n=1); the Balmer series (in which all the lines are in the visible region) corresponds to n=2
and
The Lyman series is in the ultraviolet while the Balmer series is in the visible

Balmer was in the visible region while Lyman was in the UV region of the spectrum. Each has a different quantum number because the energy levels are different...

Will the lowest energy level always correspond to quote unquote "where the electron ends up" ? What if the electron jumps up energy levels?
