Sig figs for Atomic Spectrum Questions

Postby Hanyi Jia 3B » Mon Oct 18, 2021 9:28 am

In typical atomic spectrum questions, measurements are not likely to occur. Instead, the questions give exact numbers for the energy levels. (E.g. an electron come back from n=4 to n=1)
I wonder how many sig figs will we take when we have to calculate the energy released/wavelength/frequency of the light emitted. Is there a default number of taking 3? (I know there are infinite sig figs in these calculations theoretically.)

In these questions, there will most likely be another value provided than just the energy levels. This other value could be a constant, wavelength, etc. The number of significant figures in that value should be sufficient. Hope this helps!
