Polyatomic ions

Postby Matthew Leung 1B » Mon Jul 31, 2017 3:58 pm

Does anyone know if there is any way to find the charge of polyatomic ions other than memorization? Is there a lost of polyatomic ions that we should know specifically for this class?

Yes. See the lists in my lecture notes.

You can also work them out.
For example, H2SO4 releases 2 H+ then the anion must be 2- to give SO42-.

Whereas, HCl releases 1 H+ then the anion must be 1- to give Cl-.
