Rounding up with Sig Figs

Postby MadisonB » Fri Oct 05, 2018 10:07 pm

When rounding for sig figs with a number that ends in a five, do you round up or round down? Does it depend on whether it is preceded by an even or odd number? For example, does the number 2.65 for two sig figs go to 2.7 or 2.6? thanks

When rounding for sig figs with a number that ends in 5, you would round up. So for your example, 2.65 would round to 2.7 for two sig figs.

Usually when a number ends in five, you round up. The number preceding it does not have any effect as to whether you round up or down. So in your case, the number should round up to 2.7.

Rounding up would make the most sense. Rounding down would change the final answer from what it really is.
