Naming compounds
Hi! I was wondering if we will be required to derive a chemical formula from a name of a compound in problems on tests? For example, would there be problems that just have something like this: "Cobalt(II) oxide", or will the chemical formula be given along with the name like this: "Cobalt(II) oxide (CoO)"
Re: Naming compounds
My TA said that for the first test we should know a few basic ones but most chemical formulas will be provided.
Re: Naming compounds
We should be familiar with the common polyatomic compounds and the prefixes, but I don't know if we need to have them memorized before our first test.

Re: Naming compounds
Later in the course we'll need to, but for now anything uncommon will be provided for.

Re: Naming compounds
My TA said the same, the common ones that we've been using in class and such will be used but for the most part, we will be given them.

Re: Naming compounds
I don't think Professor Lavelle with expect us to know all of the elements yet, as none of our homework problems have required that either.
