Does anyone know Lavelle's grade breakdown/rubric, i.e. how many points equal an A/A-/B/etc.?

I don't think he mentions anything on this, but he does say 50% or higher is required to pass with a C- or higher.

He doesn't say specifically so I would just assume that you take your total points you got, divide by 100, and the percent would translate to "normal" grading methods.

I'm assuming it's just a general/typical straight scale where:

93%-100%: A
90%-92.9%: A-
87%-89.9%: B+
83%-86.9%: B
and so on...

However I'm unsure about the cutoffs as the percentages get lower because you need at least 50% for a C-

I think the 50% is applied to the homework and posting on chemistry community too. If you don't get 50% or more of the total points you can't get above a C-.

Both midterms are only out of 110 points and we have a total of 500 points in the class. So if you aren't happy with your score, there are points to be gained and improve your grade.

I could be wrong but what I did was add all of the points I earned out of the total possible points to get a percentage. So like adding 4 weeks worth of chem community points, midterm, and homework points.

I think on the syllabus it says all the points added up which includes chemistry community, sapling hw, midterm 1 & 2, and a final to a total of 500 pts (if I recall correctly).

I think our class is out of 500 pts, and it's probably the regular scale where 93% and higher is an A/A+, 90% and higher is an A-, and so on.

I don't think I heard anything about curves, but who knows! As for the grading scale I think it is as mentioned above.

I've mostly heard that he uses a straight grading scale with no curves (490/500=A+, 465/500=A and so on) but I'm not entirely sure on this. The only thing I know for sure is that he doesn't down curve. Hope this helps! (:

In agreement with Alyssa, all that is on his website is the breakdown of HW (50 pts) Discussion Post (50pts) MT 1(110) MT 2 (110) and the Final 180 so getting at least a 50% of this will give at least a C-.

yep I think to pass the class with a C- or higher you'll need at least a 50% in the class. Otherwise I'm pretty sure the grade breakdown follows what Brian mentioned (93+ is an A, etc.), unless there are drastic changes in the grade distributions after the final

No,, if you earn a 50% or more on homework you will be able to pass with the homework points. A C or higher is required by UCLA to Pass the class for P/NP.

There was similar post about this, and it seems the consensus is all over the place. The syllabus does not give an exact breakdown and there are disagreements over them. I would say not to worry too much about the numbers and focus on doing your best!

I've heard this with the math departments, but sometimes professors can lower the threshold for overall grades in the class if they choose to. But, as of now, the standard gradescale applies to 14A.

I'm pretty sure I saw him respond to someone's post about this. They were concerned about getting a passing grade and he (if he's Chem_mod) responded saying 50% or higher is passing.

In a recent step-up session, I was in the UA was saying that the grade breakdown is kind of a mystery but 50% is definitely considered a C. The UA also said it is most important to just get as many points as you can.

I'm honestly curious about this as well! As far as I know, and like everyone else has said, 50% is needed to pass with a C. I think the most important thing is to get enough points as you can.

In a recent step-up session, I was in the UA was saying that the grade breakdown is kind of a mystery but 50% is definitely considered a C. The UA also said it is most important to just get as many points as you can.

Basically if this class follows basic grading scales (93% for A, etc) then you can miss 35 points total to get an A and 50 points for an A-. This is only IF it follows the way other classes do it, but it very well could be different.

Do you happen to know the minimum for the the class before you get an F? what is the minimum grade for me to pass the class

I am still a little unclear on what would be the minimum needed to pass the class, but I asked my TA before the final if he know anything about what the grading scale would be like for this class and he said that the exact breakdown/cutoffs for grading was still undecided, and that it would be influenced by how students performed on the final and in the class in general.

I think what is for sure is 93.0 would be a and anything below that and 90 would be an A-.

50% of the total points in this class equal a C- grade. So you need at least 50% of the total points to pass.

As far as grades for B and up, I believe they are the same as for any other class, but for C- it is 50% I think
