bond lengths
Out of curiosity, I was wondering if a double bond length is always .20A shorter than a single bond length. I was looking through my notes for Lewis structures and resonance and I noticed that in both examples Dr. Lavelle used, the double bond length was .20A shorter than the single bond. For example in NO3 the double bond is 1.20A and the single bond is 1.4A and for benzene the double bond is 1.34A and for the single bond it is 1.54A.

Re: bond lengths
That's an interesting observation, but I think it's just a coincidence. Bond lengths vary depending on the size of the atoms that are bonded together, so I wouldn't expect there to be any concrete pattern to the difference in bond lengths.

Re: bond lengths
There are a lot of factors aside from the number of bonds that determine bond length, so it is hard to say or apply that for every case.

Re: bond lengths
I don't think so, because that might just be a coincidence, but an interesting observation! I don't think that things fit that nicely in reality however.

Re: bond lengths
I don't believe that it'll always be that specific in every situation, but I'd just try to always remember that in order of increasing length, bond lengths are: triple bonds < double bonds < single bonds.

Re: bond lengths
The bond lengths are not the same length in every molecule with a double bond. The lengths vary per molecule. There are a lot of factors that determine the lengths of the bonds.

Re: bond lengths
it's just a coincidence, not necessarily specific, just know that double is shorter than single and triple is shorter than double

Re: bond lengths
Yeah definitely a coincidence as bond lengths heavily depend on the size of the atoms bonding.

Re: bond lengths
I'm not sure if this correct or not but I think that there are other factors that affect bond length such as which elements the bond is between

Re: bond lengths
Hi,
You could say that but it is not always. There are a lot of factors aside from the number of bonds that determine bond length, so it is hard to say or apply that for every case.
