Passing Grade

Postby Kainalu Puu-Robinson » Sat Dec 12, 2020 4:24 pm

I've seen a lot of people post on here that you only need a 50% in this class to get a C- and pass. I read the syllabus and I'm still confused because the 50% thing just doesn't sound right. On the syllabus it states:

"Group learning (Chemistry Community, Study Groups, Peer Learning, Sapling Online Homework,
etc.) is encouraged. 50% or higher is required to pass with a C- or higher."

What I think this means is that you need at least a 50% or higher on the group learning portion to pass the class, even if for example you got As on all tests. Can anyone clarify this?

I'm pretty sure this means that if you got 50% or more of the points from grades including tests, homework, chem community points then you pass the class.

That's how I originally interpreted it too, but when asked my TA clarified that only a 50% or better is required to pass with a C-, so I'm pretty sure that's true.

50% of all points (the overall grade) in the class would be passing.

In the grade breakdown there is a total amount of points that you could get in the class, as long as you get 50% of those total points you will pass with a C-

It applies I believe to the points of the assignments of the overall class in order to get a passing grade.

If I get a 50% in a chemistry class then you all need to keep me far, far, far, far away from the nearest box of chemicals!

I think 50% of the points total so as long as you get at least 250/500 you should pass.

So this is not influenced by the possible adjustment of grades at the end of the quarter right?

I thought the same thing as you did, but I am pretty sure that it means that you need 50% overall to pass.

I originally thought that it meant 50% of Chem community and homework but if what everyone else is saying is true, which I think it is as somebody said their TA confirmed it, then it should just be a 50% overall.

Anything above 50% of the total points in the class is a passing grade.

Everything from a 50%-73% is a C minus. All grades above a 73% are on a normal scale.

Since 50% is a C- in this class, anything above it is a passing grade!

Yeah, the passing grade would be 50% of the total points. I think that it depends on the weighting of the class

I believe that it is almost like a curve, if you get a 50% he will pass you with a low C.

Does anyone know that if you fail this class will you be able to still take 14B next quarter?

Just to clarify, does this mean that everyone who gets at least 50% of all points from the quarter will pass with at least a C-?

Hello, you would need 50% of all the points contributed to your grade to earn a C- in the class, which is a passing grade.

50% of all the points you can earn (250/500) would give you a C-, which is considered a passing grade.

The 50% refers to the amount of points that we can acquire in the class. The class is out of 500 pts so 250 pts would be needed to pass.

I believe it is a 50% of all the points from tests and homework and stuff that count towards you passing the class.
