Diatomic Atoms

Postby Jessica Phung 1E » Tue Sep 28, 2021 7:37 pm

Hi everyone. I have a question regarding diatomic atoms in word problems. For example, some problems will say that it produced nitrogen but nitrogen is a diatomic so would I write that as 1 mol of N or 2 moles of N?

I believe you would write it as 1 mol of N2 because it is a diatomic atom.

Hi! Because it's a diatomic molecule, it means 2 atoms, not moles, so I believe it would be written as N2.

Diatomic refers to molecules that are composed of two atoms. Here is a list of all the diatomic atoms for future reference: Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Flourine, Oxygen, Iodine, Chlorine, Iodine, and Bromine.

Just remember that the molar mass for one X atom is doubled when determining the molar mass of the molecule X2.
