Study methods

Postby 305670352 » Sun Oct 17, 2021 10:55 pm

Does anyone have a recommended method of studying for the chem 14a midterm that isn't just doing problems (ways of learning the conceptual parts)? Thanks!

I find watching youtube videos on the topics I'm struggling with very helpful. The combination of the graphics and the explanation really help me conceptualize the topic.

honestly kinda boring, but if i'm having trouble with a certain concept i read the textbook. but also attending office hours and listening to other people's question and discussions are super helpful as well!

I would say make a summary of your own! it does take time but it has always been helpful to me

Hey! I think a good way to study for the midterm would be to annotate the equation sheet to make sure you know everything on that paper you are give inside and out. That way you can see whats not on it too (like some small derived equations)

Hi! I think a good way to study for the midterm would be to summarize each main concept in your own words, watching youtube videos, reading the textbook, or going to office hours!

Other than practicing the book problems I like to watch youtube videos on the topics we are learning. And also studying with friends, and reviewing lectures, and notes. I definitely recommend watching youtube videos the most

I found that just reading the textbook is soo helpful!! and youtube videos for concepts that are more difficult.

I also find watching additional youtube videos on the topic to be very helpful, plus making sure to ask your TA to review your midterms to go over the questions you miss:)

Besides watching youtube videos and reading the book, try explaining concepts out loud to someone! This mostly helps for conceptual problems. Sometimes you'll catch yourself not fully understanding a concept or realize you need to review something a little more. When i'm studying I'll annoy my brother by reviewing concepts out loud to him, he loves it ;)

I've made quizlets for all of the concepts and important rules and i just review it every now and again. Sometimes just making the study resources alone helps a ton because it gets you to go through the material in order to condense the concepts into flashcard sized explanations! I also sometimes go through the textbook and look at the explanations for concepts that I didn't fully understand during lectures and khan academy also has some really good resources. Other than that though, I think solving problems or at least watching videos of other people solving the problems is the best way to prepare for the exams considering that the exams are formatted this way. It's sadly tedious, but practice makes perfect! :)

Personally, I find youtube videos very helpful. It might also help to form study groups and help each other understand conceptual things. Hope this helps!

I find that using previous practice problems or finding solved problems online and working backwards helps a lot, because I can clearly see each step in the process and it helps be deconstruct each problem

Try annotating your notes. I find that note annotations (ex. circle key words, highlight main ideas, add chem tips--ex. memorization techniques) allow me to dive into the conceptual aspects of this course better; meanwhile, I have the topic outline Dr. Lavelle provides on his website to aid me with focusing on particular items in my notes.

I generally really like making a set of flashcards on Anki, it's a really awesome flashcard app. I used it a lot in high school and it helped me memorize a lot of things I thought I couldn't get into my head.

I find rewriting the steps to solving the problem and describing each step as you go helps! In the end, I usually write a summary of why we use those steps and what we're solving for, looking at the problem as not just a chemistry question but also looking at the bigger picture.

I find this thread to be very helpful, personally, if I can relate what I am interested in (neuroscience in my case) to what we are learning, I can grasp it a lot better, and looking at the overall change, such as when two chemicals react, rather than only thinking about them at a molecular level helps too.

Hi,
As previously mentioned, YouTube and the textbook are great methods. Honestly, I would recommend googling unfamiliar topics and reading their Wikipedia pages. Yes, this will take more time. However, I am always impressed by the amount of detail in those articles. Plus, they also have helpful figures.

I personally like to complete practice problems to ensure I can master the concepts. Sometimes it is helpful to get the solution first and then work backward to discover the correct procedure to find the answers. Rewatching lectures and reviewing notes is also helpful.
