When you are trying to find the maximum wavelength (or minimum frequency) for an electron to be ejected, the KE = 0.

Also if the question gave the minimum energy of the photon required to emit an electron, we would then assume that Ek is equal to zero.

Ek = 0 when the minimum amount of energy needed to eject an electron is provided by the light wavelength. Therefore, all the energy from the photon is used to eject the electron and there is no excess energy.
