E= pv and E=pc Question

Postby Orly Termeie 3I » Sat Oct 03, 2015 1:04 pm

Hello! I just had a clarifying question: so you use the E=pv equation when you are finding the momentum or energy of anything other than light, correct? And you use the E=pc equation to calculate the energy or momentum of light? Thanks!

Hello!
You're correct, E=pc is the equation used to find the energy of light, because its speed is a constant,c, and also because photons have no rest mass. E=pv is the equation used to find the energy of something other than light, where you would need to calculate or be given the object/particle's velocity.
