Conversions
Im studying for the midterm and going over questions from the book. There is one asking you to find the wavelength of a baseball traveling 92 mph, and I know how to solve it. However, I know that you need a number to convert miles to kilometers, will we need to memorize this and other conversions for the midterm or will they be given if asked?

Re: Conversions
I believe they will be given if asked. Most weird conversion factors like that are usually given in the problem, or on our reference sheet. Lavelle seems to prefer to test conceptual knowledge/application rather than be grade based on memorizing certain weird conversion factors. So I wouldn't worry about those :)

Re: Conversions
I wouldn't worry about needing to do those types of conversions. As Dr. Lavelle said, everything you need to solve the questions will be on the equation sheet and the periodic table.

Re: Conversions
Hi, the constants sheet pretty much gives us everything that we will need. I don't think that we will need to memorize conversions like that.

Hi! I don’t think we will need to memorize those, and mostly everything needed will be on the reference sheet, periodic table, or given in the problem!

Re: Conversions
In many problems Dr. Lavelle has given us, like in the modules, he will usually provide the necessary conversions we are not expected to know or not on the conversion sheet, so you should be fine!

Re: Conversions
In most problems like these, there will usually be unit conversions given since miles aren't metric!

Re: Conversions
For what I observed, if units are not metric, conversation units will be given by the question or provided in the reference sheet. Examples: eV Å

Re: Conversions
Metric conversions should be memorized. However, when it comes to any other conversions, they should be given on the test.

Re: Conversions
I was worried about this too but I found out that if it isn't a metric unit, then we will be given the conversion factors to help us figure out the answer.

Re: Conversions
I don't think we will need to memorize conversions but when converting between units, a great tip is to remember that all of the units need to either align/cancel out. For instance if wanting to go from miles per hour to km per second, you would have mi/hr multiplied 1hr/3600 seconds, which now gives you mi/sec. To convert mi/s into km per sec, I would multiply mi/sec by km/mi. Hope this is clear!
