Hey everyone,

I hope your midterm went well! Since we did not get to go over week 4 material last week, I will be posting it here as well in case anyone wants to go over them during my sessions. I can try to split up the sessions so that Monday we go over week 4 content (calorimetry and specific heat calculations) and on Wednesday we go over week 5 content (work, internal energy, and entropy), but that'll be determined more so the day of. Hi! I have a question about the step up worksheet from week 4. (Question 6) How is the combined equation for the water and calorimeter derived? I am having trouble recognizing which equation it represents. I believe the top is the q values combined but I am not sure why it is put over the mass/mol of the sample. Thank you !!

Since you are trying to find enthalpy, we can the units for enthalpy to set up our equation. So the units for enthalpy are KJ/mol so the top portion would give us the energy as heat (q) which is in KJ but we still need to make it specific to the moles of the reaction which is where the bottom portion comes in. It's just a unit conversion from grams to moles.
