Indeterminacy Equation use

Postby Jordan_Wesson_2J » Mon Oct 22, 2018 5:37 pm

Is Heisenberg’s indeterminacy equation just to calculate the +/- value and is the value you calculate for deltaX, for example, the +/- value or do you need to divide it by two?

You need to divide deltaX by 2 to get the +/- value.

In this equation, delta x gives you the range in which the electron can be/ the electron's uncertainty in position, so you would need to divide it in half to get the +/- value. An easy way to think of it is to think of the example that Mr. Lavelle showed us in class where for the H- atom, an electron is confined to its nuclear diameter, 1.7E-15 m, which is the delta x/ uncertainty in position in this problem.
