H hat/2pi vs H/4pi

Postby Ariella Sassover 3A » Sun Oct 17, 2021 9:52 pm

I don't understand what the difference between h hat/2pi vs h/4pi is. Are they interchangeable or is one version preferred over the other? Also what is the significance of H hat?

Basically, in the heisenberg uncertainty equation, the right side says h/4pi. However, h hat = h/2pi, so if a problem is ever presented in a way that you need to use h hat, you can just substitute it in. I believe they are interchangeable if you convert them correctly (since they are both constants).

H hat is generally used in higher level courses with more complex derivations, but as long as you know how to interchange the constants there should be no issue. H hat is the reduced form of planck's constant, with quantizes angular momentum. H hat = h/2pi
