Baseball Example

Postby Sofia Cerpa 2E » Fri Dec 03, 2021 7:38 pm

hello, if anyone remembers Dr. Lavelle referencing a baseball when he talked about Heisenberg's Equation, could you explain its relation to me please? thank you, your help is greatly appreciated!

Remember that Heisneberg's indeterminacy equation describes the uncertainty in position and momentum (mv) relationship.Since a baseball has such a large mass, the calculated uncertainties for these characteristics would be extremely low to the point that their really not measurable. Particles on the other hand, are much smaller in mass and therefore there's more uncertainty in their position and momentum.

I believe he was just using the baseball as an example to show that there is always some uncertainty about position/momentum, but that mass is a key component to this uncertainty. As the mass increases, uncertainty decreases.
