P-orbitals molecular geometry

Postby MeenaAttota » Sat Nov 02, 2024 2:43 pm

Why are p-orbitals oriented in perpendicular directions (x, y, z), and how does this affect molecular geometry?

Electron pairs in the s orbital and p orbitals (x,y,z) make up the four regions in a Lewis dot structure. Thus, the three dimensions of a p orbital manifest as unique lone pair/electron repulsion regions in molecular geometry. They are perpendicular because electrons repel each other and want to be as far away as possible the farthest distance possible is perpendicular.
