Atomic Orbitals

Postby 305892961 » Wed Oct 18, 2023 9:53 pm

Today in the lecture, we were shown a chart that shows the differences between the shell, subshell, and orbitals. The shells and subshells made sense to me because they have a clear number and specific name, but the orbitals have different numbers like -1,0,1 and they all share one name so how do we distinguish these differences?

I'm pretty sure the orbitals have different letters associated with the numbers. 0-s, 1-p, 2-d, 3-f and they are all different based on the shape of the orbital. Hope this helps!

There are different orbitals in relation to the number of electrons there, and the subshells are related to the numbers, 0=s, 1=p,2=d, 3=f but the numbers -1,0, 1 mentioned are most likely referring to the quantum number which vary on what subshell there is.
