Wave functions are just math equations?

Postby Sophia Henry » Tue Nov 28, 2023 7:11 pm

I am wondering are wave functions just a math function like a math equation for the shape of the line/pattern of the movement of an electron's orbit? I took Multivariable Calculus and in 32B I think we learned about wave functions which were equations with f(x,y,z) if I remember correctly and I am wondering if this is the same thing that we are learning in Chemistry right now? Are these the same concept or are they different? If so, will we need to know any mathematics information about wave fun ctions for this chemistry course? LIke for the final exam, for example.

Taking a look at the wave equation it looks like you are right. However, I don't think we are expected to use this equation (i.e., solve anything) since the corequesite/prerequisite for this class is Math 31A (and its equivalents), which is single-variable calculus (while 32B is multivariable).
