Question for Thought

Postby Raul Garcia 3I » Wed Oct 05, 2016 7:26 pm

Is there a limit to how complex a orbital model can get? In other words, as the we travel up the periodic table, does accuracy fade away from depicting an orbital model?

I am not sure how complex orbitals can get but I believe there is only S,P,D and F orbitals in the periodic table.
I learned this in the summer:

1s
2s 2p
3s 3p 3d
4s 4p 4d 4f..

I noticed in the lectures that he was writing them in different order than I'm used to seeing (i.e. 4d and then 4s). Is there a reason for this?
