Magnetic Quantum Number

Postby Elle_Bertuccelli_1B » Fri Oct 14, 2016 9:54 am

Could someone explain the concept of the magnetic quantum number? I know it refers to the orientation of the electron, but how can that be applied in context?

So from my understanding, the s,p,d,f orbitals have distinctive shapes, but they can be oriented in different directions and the number possibilities of these directions can be calculated based on the l quantum number. I found the diagrams and video from this website to be helpful. http://study.com/academy/lesson/magneti ... -quiz.html
