In terms of behavior of the electron in the atom, what behavior does the magnetic quantum number explain vs. the spin magnetic quantum number? What does "spin up or down mean" in terms of the electron's behavior?

First you begin with the Principle Quantum Number, which can be found from the periodic table of elements. This determines how many energy levels there are and size. Next, the Angular Momentum Quantum Number describes the "shape". It lets you know if the orbital is s-, p-,d-, or f-. You obtain the Angular Momentum Quantum number by taking the Principle Quantum Number and subtracting it by one. Lastly, to obtain the Magnetic Quantum Number, it is + or - the Angular Momentum Quantum Number. For example, if l is 2, Ml would have the possible values of -2,-1,0,+1,+2. In this case, it would be 5 d- orbitals. We know that there cannot be more than 2e- in the orbitals. Thus, the maximum electrons would be 10. From this we can know what orbital and sub shells they are in, which gives us an approximation of where the electrons are.

The magnetic quantum number of an electron tells us precisely which orbital within a subshell that the electron occupies.

The spin magnetic quantum number has values of either +1/2 (spin up) or -1/2(spin down).

This tells us if the electron spins counterclockwise (spin up) or clockwise (spin down).

When electrons are shot through two poles of a magnet, they will separate into two streams based on their spin.

The book discusses electron spin on pages 40-41.
