Orbital Orientation

Postby Nancy Le - 1F » Sun Oct 22, 2017 11:41 pm

Does only the p orbital have lobes oriented along the x, y, z axes or do the other orbitals have different orientations as well?

Hi Nancy,

As you said, p orbitals do have orientations on the x, y, and z axis, reflective of the three p orbitals. Because there are 5 d orbitals, there are 5 different orientations for d orbitals. I have included an image below to show each of the five d orbitals. Note for the 7 f orbitals, there are 7 orientations.

Hope this helps.
