### Magnetic Numbers

Can someone re-explain how we find the possible magnetic numbers?

Magnetic quantum numbers can be found using 3 formulas (you have to use all of them to find all the magnetic numbers). They are: l, l-1, -1

### Re: Magnetic Numbers

Hi! To find quantum numbers I find it helpful to take it step-by-step.
1. The principal quantum number is any positive integer. It is the energy shell.
Ex. 1s, n=1. 3s, n=3.
2. ℓ is reliant on the principal quantum number AKA n.
ℓ can be found with the equation n-1. It tells you the shape.
It is helpful to memorize that an ℓ value of 0 is the s-orbital, 1 is p, 2 is d, and 3 is f.
3. Magnetic quantum numbers are reliant on the angular momentum quantum numbers AKA ℓ.
It includes positive ℓ , negative ℓ , and all integers in between.
Ex. ℓ =2, Mℓ = -2,-1,0,1,2
