hen you are writing the electron configuration for elements in order to find the unpaired electrons, how do you know which quantum number (ex: 4f, 3p, 2s) to continue counting up with after the core element is used form the Nobel gases? Do you simply have to count all the quantum numbers out and then take away the amount that creates the core element?

I looked at the last block the electrons occupy. For example, Bi has 3 electrons in the 6p-block, and because of Hund's Rule and the Pauli Exclusion Principle, each electron will occupy a separate subshell (px, py, pz), so there are three unpaired electrons.
