3d and 4s orbitals

Postby Sue Xu 2K » Wed Oct 25, 2017 10:43 am

Since the electrons fill the 4s orbital first, can we say that the 4s orbital is in lower energy than the 3d orbital?

When we begin to enter the 4s orbital with the elements potassium and calcium, the 4s orbital has a lower energy than the 3d orbital which is why the 4s orbital is filled first. Then as we enter the 3d orbitals, for reasons which I believe we have not been taught or reasons too complicated, the energy of the 3d orbitals becomes slightly less than the 4s orbital which is why the 3d orbital is written first. So I would say that they kind of switch roles as who has the higher energy level.
