in the book, n is the quantum number, related to size and energy
How does it relate to orbitals?

The principal quantum number (n) would tell you the size of the orbital. The higher the n value, the bigger the orbital is. Also the n value can indirectly tell you the energy of the orbital. For example, an electron at n=1 would need energy to be absorbed in order to excite the electron onto a higher n value. If the electron was at n=2 and then dropped to n=1, then it would be said that energy was released.
