hw 2.13

Postby Emely Reyna 1F » Sun Apr 29, 2018 6:59 pm

Question 2.17 asks to Describe the orientation of the lobes of the px-, py-, and pz-orbitals with respect to the reference Cartesian axes.
I'm not sure what the orientation of the lobes means. What exactly should we know about lobes?

They describe the locations of electrons in a P-orbital. So instead of saying "these electron are in the front and back," we can say "their positions are on the x-axis"
since they are in P-orbital, we state their location as "Px"

same idea for Py and Pz

The lobes are in a 3D infinity shape on the p orbital. We use the px-, py-, and pz- to describe what axis they lie on. Px- lie on the x axis, py- lie on the y axis, and pz- lie on the z axis.
