How to properly format your answers

Postby sylvie_1D » Sun Apr 29, 2018 9:02 pm

Hi, so I was confused as to how to write the arrows regarding spin. Is it half an arrow, a full arrow, or does it not matter? Also, when writing out the inert gases along side the valance electrons, which come first?

The noble gas comes first before the valence electron in the short hand notation since the noble gas represent the inner shell electrons.

I typically see a half arrow (probably because of the spin) to represent the electrons, but it does not matter.

I think Professer Lavelle used half arrows!

Professor Lavelle used half arrows in lecture and the inert gas goes first and then the remaining electrons are written out.

Does using a full arrow or half arrow indicate different properties of the electron configuration or is it just a matter of preference?

Professor Lavelle stated that when writing them out you typically will use half arrows but in his slides he could only manage full arrows that is why there is the difference. Also I believe that the noble gas will go first.

I don't think it indicates different properties of the electrons configuration. Dr. Lavelle just used half arrows, but he said it didn't matter which one you used.
