PROBLEM 2.1

2.1 Which of the following increase when the electron in a
hydrogen atom undergoes a transition from the 1s-orbital to a
2p-orbital? (a) Energy of the electron. (b) Value of n. (c) Value
of l. (d) Radius of the atom.

Can anyone please explain the difference between a 1s orbital and 2p orbital? Im still having a hard time fully understanding this concept.

The orbital that hydrogen's electron is in is the 1s orbital, the 1 meaning that the electron is in the energy level closest (1st energy level) to the nucleus. If an electron is in a 2 orbital (2nd energy level) it just means that there is a greater chance that the electron will be further away from the nucleus than and electron in the 1 orbital. The s speaks to the shape of the orbital. S orbitals are spherical and symmetrical about the nucleus.

Also the higher the number (n), the further away the electrons are from the nucleus so those electrons have higher energy compared to electrons closer to the nucleus.

For the radius of the atom, my first thought was that the radius would decrease, since we learned in class that when moving across a period, the radius generally decreases. I know that the radius does decrease though since n is moving from 1 to 2, so should we not think of placement on the periodic table when thinking about this question?

Wouldn't they all be increasing? For a. as n changes from 1 to 2 there is also an increase in energy. In b. the valuve of n is obviously increasing as n changes from 1 to 2. The value of l part c. also increases because l changes from 0 in the 1s orbital to L=1 in the 2p-orbital. And lastly for d, the radius changes as your n increases.
